Constructed during the reign of Ramesses III, 1186–1155 B.C., this magnificent temple became a place of worship and also a fortified complex, and thus had a dual purpose. He built this temple in honor of the gods and himself, intending to have some parts modeled after the famous Ramesseum of his great predecessor, Ramesses II.
Within the temple walls are intricate carvings portraying scenes of battles with the Sea Peoples and religious festivals, as well as depictions of everyday temple life.
