The graceful Temple of Isis sits on its own island, reached by a short motorboat ride that is half the fun. A felucca will often stop at Kitchener's Island, a lush botanical garden planted with exotic trees and plants brought from across Africa and Asia. Shaded, birdsong-filled and blissfully quiet, it's the perfect green pause between temples and one of the loveliest short walks anywhere in the city.
Perched on the west-bank hills, the domed mausoleum of Aga Khan III is Aswan's most photographed silhouette, especially seen from a felucca at golden hour. You usually can't go inside, but the setting — pink granite, desert and river — sums up neatly why Aswan feels so different from anywhere else in Egypt.

Chat with a local expertAswan has a domestic airport with quick daily flights from Cairo (about 1 hour 40 minutes), or you can take the overnight sleeper train — a comfortable, scenic way to arrive. Once you're here, the Nile does most of the work: motorboats and feluccas link the islands and both banks, while taxis handle the High Dam and the Obelisk out of town. Abu Simbel is reached by road or a short domestic flight. It's a compact, walkable riverfront city, so in the centre you won't need much beyond your own two feet.
