What Is Tiran Island & the Straits of Tiran?
Tiran Island is a small, uninhabited island at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, roughly 6 km off the tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The narrow stretch of water between the island and the mainland is the Straits of Tiran — a shipping channel so tight that vessels have to thread a careful line between the reefs, which is exactly why a couple of them still carry rusting shipwrecks today. The island itself is off-limits to tourists, so the whole experience happens on and under the water. Together with nearby Ras Mohammed at the southern tip of Sinai, Tiran forms the heart of Sharm's protected marine world.

The straits are guarded by four coral reefs named in the 19th century after the cartographers who charted them. Each rises steeply from deep water, so you're snorkelling or diving over dramatic drop-offs draped in soft and hard coral, with clouds of reef fish, turtles, rays and — if you're lucky — dolphins passing through the blue. Most day boats moor at two or three of them.
Jackson Reef — the northernmost and most celebrated, with a sheer wall, strong currents that pull in bigger fish, and the best chance of spotting sharks and dolphins.
Woodhouse Reef — a long, narrow reef known for its drift dives; quieter and usually reserved for experienced divers rather than snorkellers.
Thomas Reef — the smallest of the four, but a riot of colour, with a coral-covered plateau that's superb for snorkelling in calm conditions.

How to Visit Tiran Island
You visit Tiran on a full-day boat trip from Sharm el Sheikh — there's no other way, since the reefs are offshore and the island is closed to visitors. Boats leave from the marinas around Naama Bay and Sharm's old port in the morning, sail about an hour to the straits, and anchor at two or three reefs so you have several hours in the water, with a hot lunch cooked on board in between. Tiran works brilliantly for both, which is why the same boats often carry snorkellers and divers together. Snorkellers get shallow coral gardens on the sheltered sides of Gordon and Thomas, teeming with fish just below the surface — no experience needed, and a guide keeps an eye on the group. Divers come for the walls and the drift dives: Jackson and Woodhouse in particular offer classic Red Sea drifts where you let the current carry you along the reef past fusiliers, snappers and the occasional reef shark. Local tip: the currents that make Tiran's dives so good can also leave the surface choppy. If you're prone to seasickness, take a tablet before you sail and pick a spot mid-deck — and snorkel at Gordon or Thomas, the two most sheltered reefs.

Best Time to Visit & What to Bring
Tiran is a year-round trip, but the water is warmest and calmest from May to October, when sea temperatures sit around 26–28°C and you can snorkel comfortably for hours. Winter (December–February) is still very doable — the air stays warm and sunny — but the water cools to about 21–22°C, so a wetsuit or rash vest makes the day far more enjoyable. Whatever the season, the sun on the water is fierce, so pack for it.

This is one of the most family-friendly boat days in Sharm: children who can swim will love the shallow reefs, and nervous swimmers can float over the coral with a noodle or stay on board.
