The 7-day classic — 3 days Cairo, Luxor, a 3-night Nile cruise, Abu Simbel — plus one flexible extra day. Eight days buys you the full Cairo–Luxor–Aswan loop without rushing, and the eighth day is yours to spend three ways: a free day back in Cairo, an Alexandria day trip, or a sunrise balloon plus extra tombs in Luxor. Packages run this route from $900 per person.
Eight days is the quiet winner among Egypt trip lengths. It's the classic one-week route — the one we guide more than any other — with a full extra day of breathing room, and where you place that day changes the whole feel of the trip. Below is the complete day-by-day plan with 2026 costs, three ways to use day eight, and two alternative routes if temples aren't your whole agenda. This is part of our full series of Egypt itineraries from 4 to 14 days. Egypt itineraries hub
Land in Cairo, clear your visa on arrival ($25, cash), and keep the evening light. If you have energy, walk El-Moez Street and the edges of Khan El Khalili after dark — lanterns on, heat off, and your first taste of the bazaar before the deeper dive you may take on day eight. Sleep early: tomorrow is the Pyramids.

Chat with a local expertBe at the Giza plateau for the 8 AM opening, ninety minutes before the tour buses. Cover the Great Pyramid, the panoramic nine-pyramids viewpoint and the Sphinx, then drive 30 minutes south after lunch to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser — the oldest stone building on earth and the stop most first-timers wrongly skip. Pyramids of Giza guide
Local tip: anyone at the plateau offering a 'secret viewpoint' is selling a camel ride. If you want the camel photo, book it officially at the marked stands.
Give the Grand Egyptian Museum a full morning — Tutankhamun's complete collection alone needs two hours, and the Grand Staircase is the best museum moment in Egypt right now. Spend the afternoon in Coptic Cairo (the Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue), then take the evening flight to Luxor — one hour, from about $90. Grand Egyptian Museum guide

The world's greatest open-air museum, both banks in one day. Morning on the West Bank: Valley of the Kings (three tombs on the standard ticket — pay extra for Seti I or Tutankhamun), Hatshepsut's temple rising out of the cliff face, and the Colossi of Memnon. Afternoon on the East Bank: Karnak's forest of 134 columns, then Luxor Temple as the sunset turns the stone gold. Board your 3-night cruise before dinner. Valley of the Kings guide
Today Egypt turns from sightseeing into vacation. Sail south past water buffalo, fishermen and waving kids, stopping at Edfu — the best-preserved temple in the country, reached by horse carriage from the dock — and Kom Ombo, the double temple of the crocodile god Sobek, floodlit on the riverbank at dusk. Luxor & Aswan Nile cruises
Local tip: agree the Edfu carriage price before you climb in — the standard run is a few dollars each way, not what's asked afterward.
Dock in Egypt's most relaxed city. Take the motorboat out to the Philae Temple of Isis on its island, see the High Dam that created Lake Nasser, then end with a felucca sail past Elephantine Island to a painted Nubian village for hibiscus tea — the most photogenic hour of the whole week. Aswan day tours
A 4 AM start for the three-hour desert drive (or 45-minute flight) to Abu Simbel, Ramses II's colossal rock temples, moved block by block up the cliff when Lake Nasser rose in the 1960s. You're back in Aswan by early afternoon for the flight to Cairo — and unlike the 7-day crowd racing to a connection, you sleep easy: you still have a whole day left. Abu Simbel temples guide
We'll tell you honestly what the weather and crowds are really like for your travel dates.
Chat with a local expertThis is what separates 8 days in Egypt from seven — a full day with zero must-sees left. Here's how our guests actually use it, in order of popularity.
Option A — A real free day in Cairo. Go back to Khan El Khalili with time to actually haggle, drink mint tea at the 250-year-old El Fishawy café, then spend the afternoon at the Citadel of Saladin for the Muhammad Ali Mosque and the best skyline view in Cairo. The perfect low-effort finish before a morning flight home. things to do in Cairo
Option B — Alexandria day trip. Two and a half hours each way by private car gets you the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Citadel of Qaitbay on the old lighthouse site, and seafood lunch on the Mediterranean. A completely different Egypt — Greek, Roman and breezy — and very doable as a day eight. Alexandria day tours
Option C — Balloon sunrise + more of Luxor's West Bank. Place the extra day in Luxor instead (days 5–8 shift back one): sunrise hot air balloon over the Theban hills from $120, then the tombs the one-day crowd never reaches — Medinet Habu, Deir el-Medina's workers' village and the Ramesseum. Our pick for ancient-Egypt obsessives. things to do in Luxor
Beach finish — Cairo, Luxor & Hurghada. Three days Cairo, fly to Luxor for a full day of temples and tombs, then drive four hours to Hurghada for three nights of Red Sea snorkeling and genuine rest. You trade the cruise and Abu Simbel for reef time — the right call for families and anyone who measures a holiday in pool hours.
★ Temples first, beach after: our 8-day Cairo–Luxor–Hurghada package runs this exact split with flights and transfers handled. See the 8 Days Cairo, Luxor & Hurghada Tour 8 Days Cairo, Luxor & Hurghada Tour
Felucca adventure — for backpackers. The same Cairo–Luxor–Aswan loop, but you swap the cruise ship for two nights sleeping on the open deck of a traditional felucca sailboat under the stars, with simple camps, sleeper trains and a young-traveler price tag. Basic, brilliant, and the trip people talk about for years. 8-day Egypt adventure tour

Budget separately for tipping ($5–10 per day — a real part of Egyptian service culture), inside-the-pyramid tickets, the balloon and drinks. Couples: an 8-day honeymoon version of this route with a suite-class cruise runs the mid-to-luxury range and is worth every dollar. Egypt trip cost guide 8-day honeymoon package
October to April is peak Nile Valley season — 20–28°C days, cool evenings, and December–January cruises selling out 3+ months ahead. May and September are hot but cheaper and quieter. June–August hits 40°C+ in Luxor and Aswan: doable if you start at sunrise, and the balloon still flies year-round. best time to visit Egypt
Partly. Cairo, the day-8 options and Alexandria are easy independently with Uber, a driver and timed tickets. The Nile Valley is where a package earns its keep: cruise berths, Abu Simbel convoy timing and West Bank logistics are complicated to self-arrange and usually cost more piece-by-piece. If you'd rather have it handled with a private Egyptologist throughout, start with the classic packages and tailor from there. Egypt classic tour packages
