Cairo → Luxor: fly (1 hr, ~$90) or overnight sleeper train (10 hrs, ~$80 cabin) — with 8 days, flying is still the better trade.
Luxor → Aswan: the Nile cruise is the transport — you sightsee while you travel.
Aswan → Abu Simbel: road convoy (3 hrs each way) or a 45-minute flight.

Common Mistakes on an 8-Day Trip
Spending the extra day in transit: adding Sharm or Hurghada to the classic loop for one night costs more travel time than beach time — take the dedicated beach route instead.
Leaving day 8 unplanned until you arrive: Alexandria cars and balloon slots book out in high season.
Booking the cruise last-minute for December–January: they genuinely sell out.
Giving the Grand Egyptian Museum 90 minutes: half a day, minimum.

Can You Do This Itinerary Without a Tour?
Partly. Cairo, the day-8 options and Alexandria are easy independently with Uber, a driver and timed tickets. The Nile Valley is where a package earns its keep: cruise berths, Abu Simbel convoy timing and West Bank logistics are complicated to self-arrange and usually cost more piece-by-piece.
