Land in Cairo, buy your visa on arrival ($25, bring cash), and check in. If you touch down before sunset, ease into the trip with an evening stroll through Islamic Cairo — El-Moez Street and the Khan El Khalili bazaar come alive after dark, when the lanterns glow and the heat eases. Be at the Giza plateau for the 8 AM opening, before the coach groups roll in around 9:30. Give the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) a full morning. Tutankhamun's complete 5,000-piece collection alone takes two hours, and the Grand Staircase is the single best museum moment in Egypt right now. Take the early flight to Luxor (1 hour, from ~$90) and dive straight into the world's greatest open-air museum. Wake at 4 AM for the desert run to Abu Simbel (3 hours by road convoy, or a 45-minute flight) — Ramses II's colossal rock temples, cut free and lifted block by block when Lake Nasser rose in the 1960s, arguably the greatest rescue in archaeology. This is your reward day. Hurghada sits on some of the warmest, clearest reef in the world, and a boat trip to Giftun Island puts you over coral and reef fish minutes after leaving the marina. Local tip: Hurghada's reef is warm all year, but bring a rash vest for sun cover on a full day out on the water — the glare off the Red Sea is stronger than it feels.

Enjoy a slow breakfast and a last hour by the water, then take the short flight from Hurghada back to Cairo for your international connection home. • Cairo → Luxor: fly (1 hr, ~$90) — with a beach finish planned, don't lose a night to the sleeper train.
• Luxor → Aswan: this is what the Nile cruise is for — you sightsee while you travel.
• Aswan → Abu Simbel: road convoy (3 hrs each way) or a 45-minute flight.
• Aswan → Hurghada: fly via Cairo the same day; there is no quick direct road worth taking.
• Hurghada → Cairo: a 1-hour flight home — far better than the 6-hour desert drive.

October to April is peak Nile Valley season: 20–28°C days and cool evenings, ideal for temples. December–January is busiest, so book cruises 3+ months ahead. The Red Sea is warm and swimmable almost year-round, which makes this itinerary work even in shoulder months — May and September are hot in Luxor but glorious in Hurghada. • Under-booking the cruise in high season: December sailings genuinely sell out months ahead.
• Giving the GEM only 90 minutes: half a day, minimum — it's the highlight of Cairo now.

Partly. Cairo is easy independently with Uber and a timed GEM ticket, and a Red Sea resort is a simple standalone booking. The Nile Valley is where a package earns its keep: cruises, temple logistics, the Abu Simbel convoy and West Bank transport are fiddly to self-arrange and usually cost more piece by piece than as a package.
