Great Sphinx

• Your overnight train journey from Cairo to Aswan takes approximately 14 hours. You’ll travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned two-berth cabin, with all bedding provided onboard.
• Each carriage has Western-style toilets. We recommend bringing extra toilet paper, as the overall train cleanliness may differ from the standards you are used to.
• Dinner and breakfast are included and served onboard. If you are vegetarian, you may wish to bring some additional food, as the included dinner is generally meat-based.
• In rare cases, your cabin may be shared with a traveler of another gender or with a same-gender traveler who is not part of our group.

Philae Temple by Boat

Hop aboard a wooden motorboat for a scenic ride across the Nile River to Philae Temple, a beautiful island sanctuary dedicated mainly to Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess of motherhood, marriage, and magic. Walk among its grand columns, carved reliefs, and peaceful courtyards while your local Egyptologist tour guide brings the stories of ancient Egypt to life.

The Philae temple was carefully relocated in the 1960s from Elephantine Island to protect it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, an incredible rescue that helped preserve this ancient treasure for future generations.

After your morning at Philae, head over to your hotel to check in, unpack, and grab some well-earned downtime to relax and recharge. 

Kayaking on the Nile

Grab a paddle and set off on a guided Nile kayaking trip, gliding along Aswan’s beautiful waters and taking in the scenery from a whole new perspective. It’s a fun, active, and refreshing way to experience the river far off the typical tour bus track.

If you’re willing to trade a few hours of sleep for one of Egypt’s most unforgettable sights, set your alarm early! An early-morning trip to Abu Simbel is absolutely worth it.

Abu Simbel Temples

Drive south from Aswan to the epic Abu Simbel Temples, carved into the cliffs near Lake Nasser and built by Ramses II. Standing before the four colossal statues guarding the Great Temple is one of those Egypt moments that feel almost unreal, and visit the neighboring temple built for Ramesses’ favorite royal wife, Queen Nefertari. Take your time exploring the impressive halls, chambers, and ancient carvings before returning to Aswan.

Just like Philae, these temples faced submersion in the 1960s due to the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge Abu Simbel beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser, an international UNESCO-led rescue campaign moved the temples piece by piece 65 meters higher up the cliff in the 1960s. 

💡Did You Know? Ancient Egyptian engineers aligned the temple so that twice a year (in February and October), the rays of the rising sun illuminate the inner sanctum, lighting up three of the four statues while leaving Ptah, the god of the underworld, intentionally sitting in shadow!

Aswan at Your Own Pace

Heading back to Aswan by afternoon, the rest of your day is wide open for relaxed exploration. Head down to a cozy waterfront café along the Corniche, stroll the vibrant local bazaar, or tuck into a classic Egyptian comfort meal of hot ful (slow-cooked fava beans), freshly fried ta’ameya (Egyptian herb falafel), and warm pita bread paired with fresh mint tea.

Good to Know - Life on a Felucca

An overnight felucca is a rustic, shared sailing experience. Not a luxury cruise, and that’s part of the charm: just you, the Nile, the evening breeze, and an open sky filled with stars. 

You’ll sleep together on a large mattress on the open deck, with blankets provided. There is a toilet on board and mosquito-net coverage, but bringing insect repellent and a sleep sheet will be a smart idea, which we highly recommend. Keep a small overnight bag handy rather than bringing your main luggage onto the boat 

The reward? A simple, authentic experience that brings you closer to the relaxed rhythm of Nubian and Egyptian life along the Nile.

Valley of the Kings
Descend into the desert valley that served as the final resting place for Egypt’s New Kingdom pharaohs, the Valley of the Kings. Your entry ticket includes access to three remarkable royal tombs, where vivid wall paintings and hieroglyphics remain astonishingly bright thousands of years after they were painted.

Colossi of Memnon
Head to admire two towering, 18-meter-high stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III standing guard over the West Bank plain, the Colossi of Memnon. Standing beside these massive monoliths is a humbling experience and will definitely make you question whether posting two selfies a day is really the height of narcissism!
⚜️ Insider Reveal: In ancient Roman times, tourists traveled from all over the Mediterranean to hear these statues "sing"! An earthquake cracked the northern statue, causing it to whistle as morning desert breezes blew through the stone fissures until a Roman emperor repaired it and accidentally silenced the phenomenon forever.

Optional Upgrade: Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut
Enhance your morning by adding a visit to the breathtaking Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Built directly into the sheer limestone cliffs, this multi-tiered terraced temple honors one of ancient Egypt’s few female pharaohs who ruled as a full king for approximately 21 to 22 years.

Overnight Sleeper Train Back to Cairo

After a full day on the West Bank, head to Luxor station to board your overnight sleeper train back north to Cairo. Enjoy dinner served right in your private compartment as you relax and chat about your favorite moments along the Nile.

Arrive back in Cairo this morning as the city wakes up! Head straight to your hotel to freshen up, unpack, and grab a quick breather before diving into the colorful, bustling heart of historic Islamic Cairo.

Historic Al-Mu'izz Street
Hop on the local Metro with your leader to Bab al-Futuh, one of the three remaining medieval gates guarding the old Cairo. Take a guided walking tour along Al-Mu'izz Street, a living open-air museum featuring the world's highest concentration of medieval Islamic architectural treasures, soaring minarets, and ancient carved stone facades.
As you walk down Moez Street, look for the narrow alleys where local craftsmen still hammer brass, copper, and glass by hand using tools and techniques unchanged since the 14th century!

Khan El-Khalili Bazaar & El Fishawy Cafe
Step into the vibrant sensory overload of Khan El-Khalili, Cairo's famous 600-year-old atmospheric maze of souks. Test your skills with some friendly haggling for hand-carved alabaster, lamps, leather goods, and spices. 

Finish your bazaar stroll at El Fishawy Cafe, a legendary, mirror-lined coffeehouse open for over 240 years. Settle into a brass chair for a refreshing glass of mint tea or cold lemon-mint juice while soaking in the electric vibes.
