Egypt in March: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

March is one of our favourite months to guide, and it's easy to see why: the deep-winter chill has lifted, the afternoons in Upper Egypt are warm and golden, yet the punishing summer heat is still weeks away. We run Nile cruises right through March, and the balance is close to ideal — you can spend a full day at Karnak or the Valley of the Kings in shirtsleeves, then sit out on the sun deck at dusk without reaching for a heavy coat. Prices and crowds are gently coming off their winter peak too, so March quietly offers some of the best value of the whole sightseeing season. The one thing to keep an eye on is the khamaseen, a hot, sandy spring wind we'll come back to below.

Expect warm, sunny afternoons and mild mornings and evenings across the country. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is noticeably warmer by day than Cairo and almost completely dry; the north (Cairo, Alexandria) is pleasant but can still catch the odd shower early in the month. The Red Sea is warming up and becomes genuinely swimmable for most people by late March.

Local tip: watch for the khamaseen. Once or twice in spring a hot, dusty wind can spike temperatures and haze the sky for a day. It rarely lasts long — carry a light scarf and sunglasses and simply plan indoor sites (museums, tombs) for those hours.

March rewards a history-first trip that still leaves room for the sea. Cairo is at its comfortable best for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are the stars of the month — warm, dry and sunny enough for full days among the temples without the draining heat of summer — which is exactly why the Nile cruise between them is the classic March choice. Aswan has the warmest, driest days in the country right now and lovely mild evenings on the water. And unlike the winter months, the Red Sea coast is now warming up: by late March, Hurghada and the reefs are inviting enough to tack a few beach days onto the end of a sightseeing trip. Yes — for most travellers March is one of the best months of the year. Daytime temperatures are ideal for walking Karnak or the Giza plateau, the sky in the south is reliably clear for photography, and the sea is finally warm enough to enjoy. Just as importantly, March sits in shoulder season: the winter peak of December to February is winding down, so the major sites feel a little calmer, cruise cabins are easier to secure, and hotel and package prices ease back from their highest. The only real caveats are the occasional khamaseen wind and the fact that, in some years, part of Ramadan falls in March, which slightly changes the rhythm of daily life. Lean into what the warm, dry weather does best. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is superb in March, drifting past Edfu and Kom Ombo with the sun deck at just the right temperature all afternoon. Full days at the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, Karnak and the Pyramids are a pleasure rather than an endurance test. And because the sea is warming, March is the first month where you can realistically combine culture with coast — a few days of snorkelling or diving in Hurghada after your temples, with the water becoming comfortable for most swimmers by month's end. March has no fixed pharaonic festival, but the season's moving holidays often land in or around this month. The Islamic holy month of Ramadan shifts roughly eleven days earlier each year, so in some years part of it falls in March — a special time to visit, with beautifully lit streets and lively evenings after sunset, though daytime hours and some restaurant openings run differently. Sham El-Nessim, Egypt's ancient spring festival, and Coptic Easter fall in spring too and can land in late March or April depending on the year, when Egyptian families head outdoors for picnics along the Nile and in the parks. • Daytime: light layers — t-shirts and long trousers or a light dress, plus a shirt you can add or remove.
• Evening: a thin jacket or fleece for mild nights, especially on the cruise deck and in the desert.

March is shoulder-season perfection: nearly the same great temple weather as the winter peak, but with easing crowds, better value and a sea that's finally warming. If you want cooler, quieter days with the cheapest flights, look at February; if you want hotter afternoons in the south and a warmer sea for a beach-heavy trip, April is the next step up — though the khamaseen risk lingers there too. For the deep-summer swing (June to August), the equation flips entirely: brutal in Luxor but prime time for the Red Sea.
