Egypt in January: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

January is high season in Egypt for a simple reason: while much of the northern hemisphere is freezing, Upper Egypt serves up dry, sunny days that are made for temples and pyramids. We run Nile cruises all through January, and it's one of our favourite months to guide — the light on the sandstone at Karnak is soft and golden, the sky over Abu Simbel is a flawless blue, and you can walk the Giza plateau for hours without the exhausting heat of summer. The one thing most first-timers underestimate is how cold the desert gets after dark: come prepared for genuinely chilly mornings and evenings and January is close to perfect.

Expect warm afternoons and chilly mornings and evenings. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is drier and a touch warmer by day than Cairo; the north (Cairo, Alexandria) sees the odd rainy day. The Red Sea is mild but the water is on the cool side for swimming.

Local tip: those single-digit lows are real. On the Nile cruise sun deck at dawn and at Abu Simbel before sunrise, you'll want a proper jacket, not just a sweater.

January rewards an inland, history-first trip. Cairo is at its most comfortable for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are the stars of the month — dry, sunny and cool enough to spend full days among the temples — which is why the Nile cruise between them is the classic January choice. Aswan in particular has the warmest, driest days in the country right now and the gentlest evenings on the water. Yes — for classical sightseeing it's arguably the best month of the year. Daytime temperatures are ideal for walking Karnak or the Giza plateau without the draining heat of summer, and the sky is reliably clear in the south, so your photos of the temples and the Nile are at their best. The downsides are crowds and cost: January shares peak season with December, so the major sites are busy from mid-morning, cruises fill up, and hotel prices sit at their highest. None of that need spoil the trip — starting each day early beats both the crowds and the midday sun — but it does mean you should book flights, cruises and tours well in advance rather than leaving them to chance. Lean into what the cool, dry weather does best. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is at its most comfortable in January, gliding past Edfu and Kom Ombo with the sun deck at just the right temperature by midday. Full days at the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, Karnak and the Pyramids are a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance test. Desert excursions come into their own too — the White Desert, the Bahariya Oasis and a sunset camel ride at Giza are all perfect in January's mild daytime temperatures. A sunrise hot air balloon over Luxor's West Bank is unforgettable in the crisp morning air, though you'll be glad of that jacket at lift-off. The one thing to skip is a beach-and-snorkel holiday: the Red Sea is swimmable but chilly, so save Hurghada and Sharm for later in the year. The big one is Coptic Christmas on 7 January, when Egypt's Christian community celebrates with midnight mass and festive streets — a fascinating and atmospheric time to be in Cairo or to visit the ancient churches of Coptic Cairo. New Year's Eve celebrations also spill into the first days of the month at Red Sea resorts and on holiday Nile cruises, and because both dates are fixed, January is a popular window for combined Christmas-and-New-Year tours. It's worth knowing that Coptic Christmas is a public holiday, so expect some Christian-owned businesses to close on the 7th and the Coptic sites to be busier and more festive than usual. • Daytime: light layers — t-shirts and long trousers, with a sweater you can add or remove.
• Evening: a warm jacket or fleece, genuinely needed after sunset, especially on the cruise and in the desert.
• Sun protection: the winter sun is still strong — sunglasses, hat and SPF 50.

January is peak-season perfection for sightseeing but not for the sea. If you want the same great temple weather with slightly thinner crowds and lower prices, look at February or November. For warm-enough water plus comfortable land touring, October and November are the sweet spot, while the deep-summer months (June to August) flip the equation entirely — brutal in Luxor but prime time for the Red Sea.
