Egypt in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

April is the month when Egypt does everything at once, and it's one of our favourite times to guide. The temples of Luxor and Aswan are still genuinely comfortable if you start early, the Nile cruise between them is glorious, and — crucially — the Red Sea has finally warmed up enough for proper swimming and snorkelling. That combination is rare: for a few weeks you can pair classic Upper Egypt sightseeing with a warm beach without compromising on either. Spring is also in the air, quite literally, as the whole country celebrates Sham El-Nessim, the ancient Egyptian spring festival. The two things to plan around are the Easter-week crowds and the occasional khamaseen wind, and April is close to ideal.

Expect warm, sunny days countrywide and mild, pleasant evenings. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is hot by mid-afternoon — into the mid-30s°C — so plan temple visits for the morning. Cairo and Alexandria are milder and comfortable all day, and the Red Sea coast is warm with water finally swimmable at around 23°C. Rain is very unlikely anywhere.

Local tip: April is khamaseen season. A few times a month a hot southerly wind can whip up dust and haze for a day, dropping visibility and pushing temperatures up. It rarely lasts more than a day or two — keep sunglasses and a light scarf handy and you'll barely notice it.

April is the month you don't have to choose. Cairo is warm and comfortable for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are still very much in play — the temples are stunning and the Nile cruise between them is at its spring best — you just want to be out at the sites early before the afternoon heat builds. You get warm, dry, sunny weather across the whole country, a Red Sea that's finally swimmable, and the last comfortable window for Upper Egypt before the serious summer heat of May onward. That versatility is April's superpower: it's the sweet spot where cruise season and beach season overlap. The trade-offs are worth knowing. Prices and crowds climb around Easter and Sham El-Nessim, when both international visitors and Egyptian families are travelling, so the major sites and the beaches get busy for that week. Afternoons in Luxor and Aswan are hot enough that midday temple visits are draining, and the odd khamaseen dust day can cloud the sky. Play to April's biggest strength: combine inland history with the sea. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is still wonderful — warm afternoons on deck, dry evenings, and temples like Edfu and Kom Ombo best visited in the cooler morning hours. Pair it with days at the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and the Pyramids, tackled early before the heat. April belongs to spring. The headline event is Sham El-Nessim, one of the world's oldest continuously celebrated festivals, with roots stretching back to ancient Egypt. Falling on the Monday after Coptic Easter — which lands in April most years — it's a national holiday when Egyptians of every faith pour into parks, gardens and the Nile banks for family picnics, eating salted fish (feseekh), spring onions and coloured eggs. It's a joyful, very local day, and a lovely time to see Egypt at play rather than just its monuments. If a beach holiday is your priority and you don't mind serious heat inland, May and the summer months turn the Red Sea into the main event while Luxor becomes an early-morning-only affair.
