The winter rush is over, so the Pyramids, the temples and the Nile cruises are noticeably calmer and cheaper than they were in January, yet the country is bathed in reliable sunshine and the Red Sea has finally warmed up to a proper swimming temperature. The honest trade-off is the heat in the south: by mid-morning Luxor and Aswan are genuinely hot, so the rhythm of a good May trip is early starts at the temples, then afternoons by the water. May is hot and dry across the whole country, and the further south you go, the hotter it gets. Cairo is warm but manageable; Luxor and Aswan are the hot spots, regularly climbing into the high 30s and low 40s by afternoon. Build the trip around the water and the early hours. The Red Sea is the star: snorkelling and diving are superb with the sea at 25°C, and Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh make easy, sun-soaked bases for boat trips and reef days.
