June is when Egypt turns up the heat — and when the smart traveller changes tactics. Up in Luxor and Aswan the thermometer pushes past 40°C by early afternoon, so we shift our guiding to the cool of dawn: temples at sunrise, back at the pool by noon. But June is far from a write-off. It's low season, which means the lowest prices and thinnest crowds of the year at the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, and it's prime time on the Red Sea, where a warm 27°C sea and reliable sunshine make Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh irresistible. June is hot and bone-dry across the country, and the intensity rises the further south you go. Cairo is warm but manageable; Luxor and Aswan are genuinely fierce by mid-afternoon; the Red Sea coast stays a touch cooler thanks to sea breezes, with the warmest, most swimmable water of the early summer; and Alexandria is the mildest spot of all.

June rewards a coast-first plan. The Red Sea is the star: Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh serve up warm, calm water, world-class reefs and sun-soaked days that are exactly what the season is built for. Alexandria is the north's secret weapon — several degrees cooler than Cairo, with a sea breeze, corniche cafés and Graeco-Roman history that make a welcome escape from the inland heat. Cairo still works if you start early: the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo are all doable in the morning cool. It depends on what you want. For a beach-and-reef holiday, June is one of the best months of the year: the Red Sea is warm, the sun is guaranteed and the resorts are in full swing. For classic temple-and-Nile sightseeing, June is honestly the hardest month — 40°C-plus in Upper Egypt is no joke, and midday at Karnak can be draining. But here's the upside that keeps us busy all summer: June is low season, so flights, hotels and cruises are at their cheapest, and the big sites are blissfully quiet. Follow the sun sensibly. Snorkelling and diving on the Red Sea are at their finest — the 27°C water needs no wetsuit, visibility is superb, and Sharm's Ras Mohammed and Hurghada's offshore reefs are teeming with life. On the culture side, go early: a sunrise start at the Valley of the Kings or the Pyramids beats both the heat and the crowds, and a Nile cruise still works beautifully in June because the cabins and sun-deck pools are air-conditioned and shaded. June has no fixed national festival, but the Islamic calendar often brings Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr into the early summer — and because these dates shift about eleven days earlier each year, always check exactly when they fall for your trip. During Ramadan, daytime hours are quieter and some restaurants adjust their times, but the evenings come alive with lantern-lit streets and festive iftar meals — a wonderful, atmospheric time to visit. June sits at the start of Egypt's true summer. May is a touch cooler and just as good on the coast if you want to dodge the very peak of the heat, while July and August turn the dial up further — hotter still inland, but with the warmest sea of all for the beaches.
