Egypt in February: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

February is high season in Egypt, and deservedly so: while the northern hemisphere shivers, Upper Egypt hands you dry, sunny days that are made for temples and pyramids, with just enough warmth to feel like a proper escape. We run Nile cruises all through February, and it's one of our favourite months to guide — the light on the sandstone at Karnak is soft and golden, the sky over Abu Simbel is a flawless blue, and you can walk the Giza plateau for hours without the exhausting heat of summer. It's also the month of the Abu Simbel Sun Festival and a hugely popular window for honeymoons and Valentine's cruises. The one thing most first-timers underestimate is how cool the desert gets after dark, so come prepared for chilly mornings and evenings — and February is close to perfect.

Expect warm afternoons and cool mornings and evenings. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is drier and a touch warmer by day than Cairo; the north (Cairo, Alexandria) can still see the odd rainy day. The Red Sea is milder than in January but the water is still on the cool side for long swims.

Local tip: those single-digit lows are real. On the Nile cruise sun deck at dawn and at Abu Simbel before sunrise, you'll want a proper jacket, not just a sweater.

February rewards an inland, history-first trip. Cairo is at its most comfortable for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are the stars of the month — dry, sunny and cool enough to spend full days among the temples — which is why the Nile cruise between them is the classic February choice. Aswan in particular has the warmest, driest days in the country right now and the gentlest evenings on the water, and it's your springboard for the Abu Simbel Sun Festival. Yes — for classical sightseeing it's arguably the best month of the year alongside January. Daytime temperatures are ideal for walking Karnak or the Giza plateau without the draining heat of summer, and the sky is reliably clear in the south, so your photos of the temples and the Nile are at their best. Nights are a touch milder than January, which makes the cruise decks and desert evenings a little kinder. The downsides are crowds and cost: February sits firmly in peak season, so the major sites are busy from mid-morning, cruises fill up — especially around the 22nd for the Sun Festival and around Valentine's Day — and hotel prices stay high. None of that need spoil the trip: starting each day early beats both the crowds and the midday sun, but it does mean you should book flights, cruises and tours well in advance. Lean into what the cool, dry weather does best. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is at its most comfortable in February, gliding past Edfu and Kom Ombo with the sun deck at just the right temperature by midday — and with Valentine's falling mid-month, it's the honeymoon and romance season on the river. Full days at the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, Karnak and the Pyramids are a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance test. Desert excursions come into their own too — the White Desert, the Bahariya Oasis and a sunset camel ride at Giza are all perfect in February's mild daytime temperatures. The headline event is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 February, when the rising sun aligns perfectly down the axis of Ramses II's Great Temple to illuminate the inner sanctuary and the seated statues of the gods deep inside — a feat of ancient engineering that draws crowds of travellers and locals to Abu Simbel before dawn. It's one of only two days a year this happens (the other is 22 October), so if your trip lines up, it's absolutely worth the early start from Aswan. February is peak-season perfection for sightseeing but not for the sea. It's very similar to January — a little milder at night — and shares the same dry, sunny days ideal for temples and cruises. If you want the same great temple weather with warmer water and slightly thinner crowds, look ahead to March, a lovely shoulder month, or back to November. For warm-enough swimming plus comfortable land touring, October and November are the sweet spot, while the deep-summer months (June to August) flip the equation entirely — brutal in Luxor but prime time for the Red Sea.
