December is the high point of Egypt's winter-sun season, and for good reason. While Europe and North America shiver, Upper Egypt delivers dry, sunny days that are made for temples and pyramids, and the whole country takes on a festive glow as Christmas and New Year approach. We run Nile cruises right through December, and it's one of our busiest and most rewarding months to guide — the light on the sandstone at Karnak is soft and golden, the sky over Abu Simbel is a flawless blue, and you can walk the Giza plateau for hours without the exhausting heat of summer. Two things surprise most first-timers: how cold the desert gets after dark, and how quickly the Christmas-and-New-Year fortnight sells out. Come prepared for chilly mornings, book far ahead, and December is close to perfect.

Expect warm afternoons and cold mornings and evenings. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is drier and a touch warmer by day than Cairo; the north (Cairo, Alexandria) sees the odd rainy day and greyer skies. The Red Sea stays mild and sunny, though the water is cooling off for swimming.

Local tip: those single-digit lows in Luxor are real. On the Nile cruise sun deck at dawn and at Abu Simbel before sunrise, you'll want a proper jacket, not just a sweater.

December rewards an inland, history-first trip. Cairo is at its most comfortable for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are the stars of the month — dry, sunny and cool enough to spend full days among the temples — which is why the Nile cruise between them is the classic December choice. Aswan in particular has the warmest, driest days in the country right now and the gentlest evenings on the water. Yes — for classical sightseeing it's one of the best months of the year, with the added bonus of a festive atmosphere. Daytime temperatures are ideal for walking Karnak or the Giza plateau without the draining heat of summer, and the sky is reliably clear in the south, so your temple and Nile photos are at their best. The downsides are crowds and cost, and December takes them further than any other month: the Christmas-to-New-Year fortnight is the single busiest, priciest window of the Egyptian travel year. None of that need spoil the trip — starting each day early beats both the crowds and the midday sun — but it does mean you should book flights, cruises and tours very early rather than leaving them to chance. Lean into what the cool, dry weather does best. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is at its most comfortable in December, gliding past Edfu and Kom Ombo with the sun deck at just the right temperature by midday — and many boats lay on festive dinners over Christmas and New Year. Full days at the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Temple, Karnak and the Pyramids are a genuine pleasure rather than an endurance test. Desert excursions come into their own too — the White Desert, the Bahariya Oasis and a sunset camel ride at Giza are all perfect in December's mild daytime temperatures. December is Egypt's most festive month. Christmas is celebrated twice: the 25 December Western Christmas is marked by hotels, resorts and Nile cruises with special dinners and decorations for international visitors, while Egypt's Coptic Christian community celebrates its own Christmas a little later, on 7 January. December is peak-season perfection for sightseeing but not for the sea, and it carries the year's highest prices around the holidays. If you want the same great temple weather with slightly thinner crowds and lower prices, look at November before the festive rush, or January once the New Year peak passes. For warm-enough water plus comfortable land touring, October and November are the sweet spot, while the deep-summer months (June to August) flip the equation entirely — brutal in Luxor but prime time for the Red Sea.
