Egypt in August: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

August is the hottest month of the Egyptian year, and we won't pretend otherwise — midday in Luxor and Aswan is genuinely fierce, and the pyramids at noon are hard work. But August is also the month the Red Sea comes into its own: the water reaches around 29°C, the warmest it gets all year, and swimming, snorkelling and diving are at their absolute best. This is why we send most August travellers to the coast, or run a smart split trip — sunrise sightseeing in Cairo and Upper Egypt, then days on the water at Hurghada or Sharm. Add school-holiday timing and softer land prices, and August turns out to be a genuinely good month for families and beach lovers who plan around the heat.

Expect intense, dry heat inland and warmer, more humid conditions on the coasts. The south (Luxor, Aswan) is the hottest part of the country by a wide margin, with dry desert air and blazing afternoons. Cairo is very hot but a touch more bearable, while the Red Sea and the Mediterranean at Alexandria feel milder thanks to sea breezes and warm water for swimming.

Local tip: in Luxor and Aswan, treat August as a sunrise-only month for the temples. We start West Bank tours at first light and are usually back at the hotel pool before the worst heat arrives around noon.

August rewards a coast-first trip. The Red Sea resorts — Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, El Gouna and Marsa Alam — are the stars of the month, with warm, calm water perfect for snorkelling straight off the beach and some of the best diving conditions of the year. Marsa Alam in particular suits families and keen divers, with house reefs calm enough for children and dugong and turtle sightings offshore. Alexandria and the north coast are the classic Egyptian summer escape: several degrees cooler than the interior, breezy, and lined with Mediterranean seafood, Greco-Roman ruins and the Bibliotheca. Cairo is doable if you start early and lean on air-conditioned highlights like the Grand Egyptian Museum. Luxor and Aswan are still worth it for serious history lovers, but only at dawn — the light on the temples at sunrise is spectacular, and it's the one comfortable window in the day. It depends entirely on what you want. For a Red Sea beach and diving holiday, August is one of the best months of the year — the sea is at its warmest, visibility is excellent, and resorts are geared up for summer. It's also strong for families: the school holidays line up, kids are happy in the water, and land prices for Cairo and Upper Egypt are softer than in the winter peak, so a combined trip can be excellent value. The honest downside is the inland heat. A pure temple-and-cruise itinerary through Luxor and Aswan is punishing in August, so if that's your priority, October to April will serve you far better. Head for the water. Snorkelling and diving on the Red Sea reefs are the headline activity, with 29°C water that barely needs a wetsuit and marine life at its most active. August has no major ticketed festivals, but it has a strong seasonal character. It's the height of the Gulf and domestic summer holiday, so Alexandria, the north coast and the Red Sea resorts are lively and social well into the night, when Egyptians do most of their sightseeing and shopping to escape the daytime heat. The traditional Wafaa El-Nil (Faithfulness of the Nile) season falls around mid-August, marking the ancient flood with cultural events in Cairo and along the river. If your dates coincide with Ramadan or one of the Eids in a given year, expect shifted hours and a special atmosphere — but note these move earlier each year, so check the calendar rather than assuming fixed dates. For families travelling on a budget in the holidays, August's softer land pricing is the real draw.

August is the peak of the hot season, all but identical to July inland but with the warmest sea of the year on the coast. If you want the same warm water with the heat just starting to ease, September is the smarter shoulder pick, and by October the whole country becomes comfortable again for temples and cruises. Choose August specifically for the Red Sea at its best and for family-holiday timing; choose the cooler months if Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise are the point of your trip.
