Dahab's most famous site is a near-perfect submarine sinkhole dropping over 100 metres just off the shore. Recreational divers explore the shallow reef rim and the coral 'Bells', while snorkellers float above a wall of fish in warm, glass-clear water. North of town, past Ras Abu Galum, the Blue Lagoon is a shallow turquoise bay ringed by desert mountains and a handful of Bedouin camps. This protected coastal reserve between Dahab and the Blue Lagoon is where the mountains fall straight into the sea. There's no road in — you arrive on foot, by camel or by boat — and the reward is untouched fringing reef, Bedouin fish lunches and total quiet. Dahab is one of the world's great freediving hubs — the calm, deep, warm water off the Lighthouse and the Blue Hole draws athletes and first-timers alike. Beginners can take a discover-scuba or open-water course for a fraction of European prices, while snorkellers can master duck-dives with a coach. If you've ever wanted to learn to dive, this is the place to do it.
You don't need a boat in Dahab — the reef starts at the shoreline. The Lighthouse, right in town, is the go-to entry point, with easy access and clouds of reef fish, while nearby sites like the Three Pools and the Islands offer coral gardens and swim-throughs for confident snorkellers. Bring your own mask and you can drift the house reefs any time of day.
Inland, the Sinai desert hides slot canyons of wind-carved sandstone streaked in red, purple and gold. The Colored Canyon near Nuweiba is the classic, an easy walk between towering narrow walls, while Salama Canyon offers a quieter, more adventurous scramble. The desert behind Dahab is made for sundown adventures. Bounce across the dunes on a quad bike, ride a camel with a Bedouin guide, then stop for sweet tea and a barbecue under a sky thick with stars. Two hours inland stands the mountain where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments. The classic pilgrimage is a pre-dawn climb to summit Mount Sinai for sunrise, followed by a visit to St Catherine's Monastery — one of the oldest working monasteries in the world, home to the Burning Bush. Dahab's soul is its seafront promenade in Assalah and Masbat, a car-free strip of cushioned cafés, dive shops, fish restaurants and souvenir stalls right on the water. Spend an evening drifting between them, watching the light change on the mountains, bargaining for a Bedouin trinket, and eating grilled calamari with your feet almost in the sea. Dahab's position on the Gulf of Aqaba makes it a launch pad for one of the region's great bucket-list add-ons. A fast ferry from Nuweiba (or a short flight) puts you in Jordan for a day at Petra, the rose-red city carved into the cliffs. A dawn flight can have you at the Valley of the Kings and Karnak in Luxor, or the Giza pyramids in Cairo, and back on the seafront for dinner. Two days covers the essentials — a snorkel or dive at the Blue Hole and a desert safari — but Dahab is a place people struggle to leave, and three to four days is the sweet spot. That gives you time to dive or learn to freedive, do a canyon-and-lagoon safari, and still tackle the long Mount Sinai sunrise day without burning out. Chat with a local expertThere's no airport in Dahab itself. Almost everyone flies into Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport, about a 60–90 minute drive south, and continues by private transfer or bus; Taba airport to the north is another option. Once you're in town you won't need a car — Dahab is small and walkable, the seafront is pedestrian, and cheap local pickups and taxis cover the short hops to the Lighthouse or the Blue Hole. For safaris and inland day trips, a guided tour with transport is by far the easiest way to go.
Dahab suits every budget. Masbat and Assalah put you steps from the seafront cafés and dive centres and are ideal for first-timers; the Lighthouse area is the diving and freediving heart of town; and the quieter southern bay of Dahab has smart four- and five-star resorts with pools and private beaches. Dahab is a year-round destination, but spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal — warm, sunny days, comfortable water for diving, and none of the summer extremes. Summer is hot but very doable if you plan around the midday sun, and the sea stays warm well into November.
