Egypt in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect (2026)

October is the month we quietly recommend to anyone who asks us for the single best time to see Egypt without compromise. It is the great all-rounder: the brutal summer heat of Luxor and Aswan has eased into warm, walkable days, the Red Sea is still bath-warm from the long summer, and the Nile cruise season roars back to life after its quiet spell. We run more first-time itineraries in October than almost any other month because you genuinely can do it all — a morning among the temples, an afternoon on a cruise deck, a snorkel over the reef later in the trip — without one part of the country punishing you for it. The only catch is that everyone else has worked this out too, so prices and crowds are on the way up toward the winter peak.

October is dry and sunny across the whole country with barely any rain. Cairo and the north are comfortably warm rather than hot; the south (Luxor, Aswan) is still properly warm by day but a world away from the summer extremes, and evenings are mild rather than cold. The Red Sea holds onto its summer warmth, making this one of the best all-round swimming and sightseeing months of the year.

Local tip: Luxor and Aswan still hit the mid-to-high 30s at midday early in the month. Start temple visits at opening time, break for a long lunch through the hottest hours, and you'll be comfortable all day.

October is one of the few months where you don't have to choose. Cairo is warm and easy for the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Luxor and Aswan are back on the menu for full days of temple-touring now that the heat has eased, which is exactly why the Nile cruise between them fills up again this month. Aswan is the warmest, driest city in the country right now and the gateway to Abu Simbel. And unlike the deep-winter months, the Red Sea is still warm enough for genuine beach and snorkel days, so Hurghada and Sharm slot neatly onto the end of a classic Nile trip. Yes — for most travellers it's the best time of the whole year. October gives you the comfortable land-touring weather of winter and the warm sea of summer in the same trip, without the extreme heat of August or the cold nights of January. Days are reliably sunny and dry, the light on the temples is superb, and you're not battling either the furnace of the south in summer or the chilly Nile-deck dawns of midwinter. The trade-off is demand: October sits on the ramp back up to peak season, so cruises, the best guides and hotel rooms are filling fast and prices are noticeably higher than the summer lull. This is the month to combine everything Egypt does well. A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan is at its most enjoyable now — warm, sunny days on deck gliding past Edfu and Kom Ombo, with the season back in full swing after the summer quiet. Full days at the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Hatshepsut's Temple and the Pyramids are a pleasure again rather than an ordeal, especially with an early start. And because the Red Sea is still a warm 27°C, October is one of the best months to bolt a few days of diving or snorkelling in Hurghada or Sharm onto the end of a temple trip. The headline event is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 October, the second of the two annual alignments (the other falls on 22 February). Twice a year, the rising sun pierces the length of Ramses II's Great Temple to illuminate the statues of the gods in the inner sanctuary — a feat of ancient engineering that draws crowds, music and celebration to the temple at dawn.
