The Giftun Islands, a protected marine park just offshore, are Hurghada's headline act — fringing reefs of hard and soft coral teeming with clownfish, parrotfish and the occasional turtle in bathwater-clear shallows. Orange Bay, on Giftun's northern tip, is the postcard everyone comes for — a sandbar of powder-white sand fading into impossibly blue lagoon, with a swim-up bar and a shallow house reef right off the beach. It's the more polished, resort-style island day out. Go on a weekday and arrive early; by midday the day-boats stack up and the sandbar fills. Orange Bay
Mahmya is the eco-conscious beach escape within the Giftun protectorate — a low-key stretch of white sand, thatched shade and a genuinely excellent house reef you can snorkel straight off the shore. The Grand Aquarium is the best kid-friendly attraction on dry land — a huge complex of themed zones and a walk-through tunnel with sharks, rays and reef fish gliding overhead, plus a small zoo and rainforest section. When you've had your fill of the water, the Eastern Desert delivers the other half of Hurghada — an afternoon of quad bikes or 4x4s roaring over the dunes to a Bedouin camp for tea, a camel ride and a blazing desert sunset. Sha'ab El Erg, better known as Dolphin House, is a horseshoe reef north of Hurghada where pods of wild spinner dolphins regularly come to rest and play. A boat trip out gives you a real chance to snorkel near them in the open sea — nothing captive about it. Sightings are never guaranteed, but on a good day it's the highlight of the whole trip.
Not everyone wants to snorkel. A semi-submarine or glass-bottom boat lets you watch the reefs through big underwater windows, while the Sindbad Submarine actually dives to around 22 metres for a proper look at the coral walls — both ideal for grandparents, small children and anyone who'd rather stay dry.
As the sun drops, the Marina Boulevard is where Hurghada comes out to play — a waterfront promenade of yachts, seafood restaurants, shisha lounges and bars wrapped around the harbour. It's the most polished corner of town: come for sunset, eat fresh fish and watch the boats come in.
For the real, un-touristy Hurghada, head to El Dahar, the original town north of the resort strip. Its bustling souk, spice stalls, coffee houses and old mosque are where locals actually shop and gather — a world away from the marina. This is the one land excursion we push hardest: Luxor, the world's greatest open-air museum, is only about four hours west by road. A long but rewarding day gets you to the Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple and Hatshepsut's temple and back to your Hurghada hotel by night — the perfect way to add real ancient Egypt to a beach holiday. Chat with a local expertHurghada International Airport takes direct flights from across Europe and short domestic hops from Cairo (about an hour). From Cairo you can also drive or bus (roughly 5–6 hours across the desert), and it's about 4 hours by road from Luxor. The resort strip runs for kilometres, so around town you'll rely on cheap taxis, Uber or hotel shuttles — agree a fare first, and let your tour company handle marina transfers for boat trips.

Hurghada is a year-round beach destination, but spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the sweet spot — warm sun, hot sea and none of the midsummer intensity.
